We took the kids out trick or treating this year, the second time for Sierra and the first for Kade.
Sierra’s princess costume was a production (in every sense of the word). It had to be shortened to prevent her tripping on dark uneven walkways and eighty year old porches. Getting her to wear her sneakers instead of the accompanying useless plastic shoes was a titanic battle- fortunately the crinoline prevented her from seeing her own feet.
Kade was initially not a big fan of his dragon costume (see the video for details). It took both of us to insert him, and he was not gruntled when the process completed. Fortunately, being 18 months old has certain advantages, one of which is a short attention span. He soon forgot about the wings and tail and went burbling along.
Last year, Sierra was afraid to approach any doors alone- it took lots of coaxing. This year her confidence and self assertiveness started to show, though houses with blacklights and ghostly soundtracks still tended to spook her. Kade feared nothing (dragons rush in where princesses fear to tread). It was difficult to keep him from walking straightinto some houses, particularly those with dogs.
He still has not quite figured out the protocol. He would take a piece of candy, then hand it back, only to pick up another. At one point, he was contributing previously collected lollipops at subsequent stops. Not much was left by the end of the night.
