We went rafting on the Green River in Utah at the end of June along with Don’s high school friends Steve Nash and Mark Miller. Don and Terra drove out from Palo Alto and picked up Laura, Kade, and Sierra en route at the Salt Lake City Airport. The put in spot was just below Flaming Gorge Dam, in the northeastern corner of the state- take out was 13 miles downriver. We stayed three nights – camping at the same spot – and hiking out a couple of miles in order to float the upper portion of the river twice. Fishing was good (Don caught two) and the river beautiful, though a little hazy from the Church Camp fire.
We stopped a night in Vernal on the way back and visited Dinosaur National Monument. The quarry exhibit hall reopened last fall after having been under repair for five years (expansion and contraction of bentonite had ruined the original 1958 structure). The new building is much as Don (dimly) remembers it from visiting in the 1960’s.
